Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Nkululeko Dunga, has reaffirmed the Gauteng Provincial Government’s commitment to accountable governance, responsive service delivery and inclusive economic growth during an oversight visit to Tembisa.
The visit formed part of the provincial government’s ongoing oversight programme aimed at monitoring service delivery, evaluating the implementation of development initiatives and engaging directly with communities to better understand the challenges affecting their daily lives.
During the visit, MEC Dunga met with residents, community leaders and local stakeholders to listen to their concerns and discuss practical solutions to improve service delivery. Discussions centred on key issues including infrastructure development, municipal services, housing, sanitation, roads, waste management, public facilities, youth development and the creation of sustainable economic opportunities.
Addressing community members, Dunga emphasised that effective governance is built on active engagement with residents and ensuring that public resources are used to improve lives.
“Our responsibility as government is to remain present within our communities, understand their challenges and ensure that every public investment translates into improved services and opportunities for our people,” said Dunga.
The MEC highlighted that oversight visits play a critical role in strengthening accountability and transparency by allowing government to identify service delivery gaps, monitor progress on existing projects and work with relevant departments to accelerate solutions.
Residents welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with government, raising concerns about deteriorating infrastructure, unemployment, inadequate municipal services and the need for increased investment in local economic development initiatives that can create jobs, particularly for young people.
Reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to inclusive development, Dunga said government remains focused on building communities that provide quality services and opportunities for economic participation.
“As government, we remain committed to building communities where people have access to quality services, economic opportunities and an environment that supports growth and development. Oversight visits such as these enable us to engage directly with residents and ensure that their voices shape government interventions,” he said.
The oversight visit also enabled provincial officials to inspect ongoing development projects and identify areas requiring urgent intervention. The issues raised by residents will inform future planning, resource allocation and strengthened collaboration between provincial departments and local government to improve service delivery outcomes.
Community leaders praised the visit, describing it as an important demonstration of government’s willingness to listen, engage and work with residents to address local challenges.
The visit concluded with a commitment to continued engagement, regular monitoring and follow-up interventions to accelerate development projects, strengthen municipal performance and improve the quality of life for the people of Tembisa.
