The second day of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz 2025 continued to light up Johannesburg with an unforgettable fusion of sound, soul, and sophistication. The festival’s signature blend of international mastery and South African excellence was on full display as some of the most celebrated names in contemporary jazz graced the stages.
Headlining the evening was the legendary Oumou Sangaré, whose rich Malian vocals captivated audiences and reaffirmed her place as one of Africa’s most influential musical voices. Her performance brought a deep sense of tradition and cultural pride, weaving storytelling and rhythm into a spellbinding sonic journey.
Joining the lineup were some of South Africa’s most dynamic and innovative jazz artists. Marcus Wyatt delivered a bold and brassy performance that paid homage to jazz’s protest roots while embracing modern improvisation. Sibusiso Makhathini mesmerized the crowd with his spiritually charged piano compositions, blending traditional African textures with contemporary jazz sensibilities.
The day also featured a new generation of trailblazers including Siphelelo Mazibuko, Sisonke Xonti, Kgontse Makhene, and Benjamin Jephta, each bringing their unique flair and creative edge to the stage. From soulful saxophone solos to genre-bending bass lines, their performances reflected the evolving heartbeat of South African jazz — deeply rooted, globally inspired, and unapologetically fresh.
As the city’s skyline shimmered under the spring night, festivalgoers soaked up not just the music but the shared spirit of unity, artistry, and joy that defines this annual celebration.
The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz continues through the weekend, promising more unforgettable collaborations, genre-defying performances, and world-class entertainment.
