Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi today briefed the media on the outcomes of the Executive Council (EXCO) Lekgotla and unveiled bold new initiatives aimed at strengthening governance, tackling political killings, and creating opportunities for unemployed youth through the relaunch of Nasi iSpani Reloaded.
Establishment of Political Killings Task Team
In response to growing concerns over politically motivated murders in the province, Premier Lesufi announced the formation of Gauteng’s first-ever Political Killings Task Team.The specialised unit—comprising senior detectives, forensic experts, and intelligence officers—will begin operations within the next four weeks and investigate cases dating back to 2010.
“We cannot allow politically motivated violence to undermine our democracy. This task team will pursue every lead to ensure justice is served,” said Premier Lesufi. The Premier also urged communities, political parties, and government officials to cooperate fully with investigators.
Nasi iSpani Reloaded: Empowering Gauteng Youth
Premier Lesufi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fighting unemployment by launching Nasi iSpani Reloaded, a large-scale skills development and training programme set to roll out from 6 September 2025 until 31 January 2026. Delivered in partnership with 71–72 technical schools across the province, the programme will train unemployed youth aged 18–35 in practical trades such as plumbing, carpentry, electronics, welding, automotive repairs, bricklaying, and more.
Key Features of Nasi iSpani Reloaded:
Recruitment: Over 78,000 young people were invited to participate, with more than 15,000 applications received.
Training Schedule: Conducted on weekends and during school holidays.
Stipends: Participants will receive financial support:
R1 200 per month (Grade 9–12)
R3 000 per month (Matric/Technical/Certificate holders)
Certification: Industry-recognised certificates will be awarded upon completion, boosting employability and entrepreneurship. “Through Nasi iSpani Reloaded, we are building a generation of skilled, employable youth who will not only find work but also contribute to rebuilding our communities,” Premier Lesufi said.
