The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure today conducted an oversight inspection of the illegally occupied buildings linked to the Carltonville Police Station precinct alongside Councillor Caarl Steenkamp, highlighting the urgent need for intervention to restore public infrastructure and uphold the rule of law.
During the visit, the Minister expressed grave concern over the deteriorated and unsafe condition of the buildings, noting extensive vandalism, neglect, and unlawful occupation that have rendered the properties unfit for their intended public service purpose.
“The state of these buildings is unacceptable. Public infrastructure meant to serve communities cannot be allowed to fall into criminal occupation and decay,” said the Minister.
The Minister confirmed that urgent assessments will be undertaken to determine the structural integrity of the affected buildings and whether rehabilitation, securing, or demolition will be required. He further emphasized that accountability must follow for any failures that contributed to the deterioration and unlawful occupation of the site.
Councillor Caarl Steenkamp welcomed the Minister’s intervention, describing the oversight visit as a critical step toward reclaiming public assets and restoring safety and dignity to the surrounding community.
This intervention forms part of broader government efforts to reclaim hijacked and illegally occupied public buildings, protect state assets, and ensure infrastructure is properly maintained for the benefit of all South Africans.
