HUGE INCENTIVE FOR KADIMA AS NEXT BOUT ELEVATED TO WBC AFRICA STATUS

The already top-heavy “Magic at the Palace” tournament at Emperors Palace on July 11 received another boost.

Ryad Merhy’s WBC bridgerweight championship win in Belgium means that his WBC Africa belt is now vacant. Consequently, Golden Gloves petitioned the World Boxing Council to elevate the Jose Kadima-Herbert Matovu fight from an ABU title bout to the full WBC Africa version, which the organisation has agreed to.

Apart from elevating the July 11 event, this is significant for several other reasons.

Winning the WBC Africa title secures a fighter direct entry into the WBC’s top 40 global ratings. This official recognition provides the essential leverage needed to advance toward higher-tier regional belts, such as the WBC International or Silver titles. Ultimately, it accelerates a continental champion’s pathway into the world top 15 and contention for a world title shot.

“Very happy about this,” said promoter Rodney Berman. “We’ve long believed Kadima is special, so there’s even greater motivation for him to keep winning. Matovu, like him, is a puncher, so I anticipate a thrilling fight next month.”
