The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has recorded robust enforcement outcomes during the first week of the new year, demonstrating the continued impact of the E Thoma Ka Wena – It Starts With You! provincial road safety campaign.
Between 01 and 04 January 2026, the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI), in collaboration with officers from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), conducted intensive stop-and-search operations across Johannesburg and Tshwane, resulting in 391 handwritten notices and 690 e-force infringements issued.
During the operations, 48 vehicles were discontinued for serious defects, seven vehicles were impounded, and nine arrests were made, including eight for drunk driving.
Public transport compliance remained a priority, with enforcement revealing 90 minibuses operating without licence discs, 62 drivers without valid driving licences, and 22 minibuses discontinued for critical safety defects.
MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, commended GTI officers for their commitment to road safety during the New Year period.
“These results demonstrate that our zero-tolerance approach continues into 2026. We are encouraged by the visible impact of the E Thoma Ka Wena campaign, but enforcement alone is not enough. Every road user must take personal responsibility for safety. It starts with you,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela.
These operations form part of the 365-Day Arrive Alive Road Safety Campaign, a national initiative focused on three critical pillars: education and awareness, law enforcement, and community engagement.
The campaign aims to promote safer road user behaviour throughout the year.
The Department urges all road users to prioritise safety, obey traffic laws, and make use of only licensed and roadworthy public transport.
