Visitor Numbers and World-Class Stadium Upgrades
Johannesburg, South Africa – Gauteng has once again proven why it is the beating heart of South African tourism, recording historic growth in both international and domestic visitor numbers, while unveiling world-class infrastructure upgrades at the iconic FNB Stadium.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the FNB stadium today (Sunday, 10 August) , MEC for Economic Development, Tasima Lebogang Maile, proudly announced that Gauteng welcomed over 3.8 million international visitors in the 2024/25 financial year up from 2.6 million the previous year. This surge contributed a record-breaking R41 billion in international tourism revenue, far exceeded the provincial target of R29 billion.
Domestic tourism also flourished, with 6.4 million trips generating approximately R21 billion in spending, driven by high-profile events, cultural experiences, and a growing reputation for exceptional visitor hospitality. Signature events alone injected R1.8 billion directly into the provincial economy, while small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) reaped over R19 million from event-related activities.
“This performance is no accident—it is the result of strategic investment, innovative partnerships, and a relentless commitment in making Gauteng the preferred destination for both local and global traveller’s,” said Maile. “We are not only bringing the world to the Province—we are taking Gauteng to the world.”
FNB Stadium: A Symbol of World-Class Readiness
The announcement was made against the backdrop of Gauteng’s tourism crown jewel—the newly renovated FNB Stadium—which has undergone a series of infrastructure enhancements. Operated through a public–private partnership with Stadium Management South Africa, the upgrades have elevated the stadium’s capacity to host world-class sporting spectacles, concerts, and international conferences.
The renovations feature enhanced visitor facilities, improved accessibility, and cutting-edge event technology—ensuring every fan, delegate, or tourist experiences the best Gauteng has to offer.

“Tourism and infrastructure go hand-in-hand. The better our facilities, the better our ability to attract high-impact events that grow our economy and showcase our vibrant culture,” Maile added.
Gauteng’s Winning Formula
The province’s tourism strategy, anchored on expanded airlift capacity, new international routes, and targeted global marketing, continues to yield extraordinary results. Aggressive bidding for high-impact signature events—from international sports tournaments to cultural festivals—has positioned Gauteng as the most-visited province in South Africa, a title it proudly retains.
