The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, together with the City of Johannesburg, yesterday handed over 168 fully subsidised housing units to qualifying beneficiaries at the Riverside View Mega City development.

The handover forms part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s continued effort to accelerate housing delivery and restore dignity through secure home ownership.

Among the beneficiaries were elderly residents, people living with disabilities, and families who have waited many years for a place to call home. For many of the new homeowners, receiving the keys marked more than just the allocation of a house, it represented security, dignity and the beginning of a new chapter for their families.

From the first keys handed over to the final walk through their new front doors, the atmosphere at Riverside View was filled with emotion and celebration. Moments like these remind us why housing delivery remains one of government’s most important responsibilities, because behind every home delivered is a life transformed.

One of Gauteng’s Most Successful Mega Developments

Riverside View is widely regarded as one of Gauteng’s most successful integrated human settlements developments, demonstrating what can be achieved through effective partnerships between government and capable developers.

Located within the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality near Steyn City, the development forms part of the province’s Mega Projects Programme, which focuses on delivering large-scale integrated communities with access to housing, infrastructure and economic opportunities.

Once completed, Riverside View will deliver close to 10 000 housing opportunities, including:

  • 4 765 Breaking New Ground (BNG/RDP) units
  • 3 856 Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (FLISP) units
  • 1 108 social housing units.

This mixed-income approach ensures that the development accommodates a wide range of residents while promoting spatial integration and sustainable urban growth.

Quality Delivery On Time and Within Budget

A key factor behind the success of Riverside View has been the consistent delivery of quality housing within approved budgets and project timelines.

The developer continues to demonstrate strong performance in delivering well-built units supported by proper infrastructure and community facilities. The project has become a benchmark for large- scale housing developments in Gauteng, showing that housing can be delivered both efficiently and to a high standard.

Building Integrated Communities

Beyond housing, Riverside View is being developed as a fully integrated human settlement designed to provide residents with access to social amenities and economic opportunities close to where they live.

The development includes plans for:

  • Schools and early childhood development centres
  • Healthcare facilities and clinics
  • Parks and recreational spaces
  • Shopping and business sites
  • Community facilities and public open spaces
  • Pedestrian walkways and supporting infrastructure.

The development is also creating significant local economic opportunities, with more than 12 000 jobs created to date through construction and SMME participation.

Beneficiaries are primarily drawn from Diepsloot, Ivory Park and surrounding communities within Greater Johannesburg Region A, ensuring that housing opportunities benefit local residents.

Progress on Gauteng’s Mega Projects Programme

Riverside View forms part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Mega Projects Programme, which aims to transform housing delivery through large-scale integrated developments.

To date, 31 mega projects have been identified across the province at different stages of development:

  • 18 projects currently under construction
  • 11 projects at detailed planning stage
  • 2 projects at early planning stage.

These developments collectively represent a major step towards addressing Gauteng’s housing demand while ensuring communities are built with infrastructure, services and economic opportunities integrated from the outset.

Restoring Dignity Through Housing

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements remains committed to accelerating the delivery of housing opportunities across the province.

Each handover brings government closer to its goal of ensuring that every qualifying household has access to safe, dignified and secure housing.

The Department will continue working with municipalities, developers and communities to deliver integrated human settlements that improve lives and strengthen communities.
