Freedom Park, the national heritage site and memorial, will host a series of pre-Heritage Day events to honour the diverse histories, cultures, and sacrifices that shaped South Africa’s democracy. These activities form part of the build-up to the official Heritage Day celebrations on 24 September.
As the custodian of the nation’s story of freedom and humanity, Freedom Park offers a symbolic space for reflection, dialogue, and celebration. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with programmes that include:
Wreath-laying and remembrance ceremonies at Isivivane and the Wall of Names, honouring those who gave their lives in the struggle for freedom.
Cultural performances and storytelling, showcasing South Africa’s living heritage through music, dance, and oral traditions.
Educational tours and exhibitions, giving school groups and the public insight into the journey from colonialism and apartheid to democracy.
Public dialogues and workshops on the meaning of heritage in a democratic South Africa, promoting unity in diversity.
“Freedom Park exists to ensure that the sacrifices of our past are never forgotten and that our collective heritage is preserved for future generations,” said [Insert Spokesperson Name, Title]. “As we approach Heritage Day, these activities remind us that our diversity is a source of strength and pride.”
The pre-Heritage Day programme will run from 23 September at Freedom Park, Pretoria. Members of the public, schools, community groups, and media are invited to attend. Entrance will be free/discounted.
