The Acting Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Major General David Chilembe, today provided an update on the country’s ongoing repatriation operations, highlighting the significant role being played by the Beitbridge Port of Entry in Musina.

Major General Chilembe said the Beitbridge Port of Entry remains the primary hub for repatriation activities, with the majority of individuals being processed through the facility. He noted that the repatriation facilitation function has been relocated to Musina following the official closure of the Durban repatriation centre, ensuring that operations continue seamlessly at one of South Africa’s busiest border crossings.

The Acting Commissioner reaffirmed the Border Management Authority’s commitment to conducting repatriation processes in a safe, orderly, humane, and lawful manner, while maintaining the integrity and security of the country’s borders through coordinated efforts with relevant government departments and law enforcement agencies.

Major General Chilembe further announced that the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration will undertake oversight visits to various repatriation centres across the country. The visits are intended to monitor operational processes, assess the effectiveness of repatriation measures, engage with officials on the ground, and receive progress updates on the implementation of migration management interventions.

The oversight programme underscores government’s commitment to strengthening migration management, enhancing interdepartmental coordination, and ensuring that repatriation operations are carried out efficiently and in full compliance with South African legislation and applicable international obligations.

The Border Management Authority remains committed to safeguarding South Africa’s borders while facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods, and ensuring that migration management processes uphold the rule of law, human dignity, and national security.
