The Metropolitan Collective Shapers hosted an inspiring and forward-thinking event at Melrose on September 26, 2025, bringing together innovators, thought leaders, and community voices for an engaging conversation on Agriculture and Psychological Well-being.

Under the theme “Cultivating Minds and Harvesting Futures”, the event explored the intersection between sustainable agriculture and mental health — two crucial pillars of community development and resilience. The discussions aimed to highlight how food systems, land use, and agribusiness opportunities can empower young people, promote environmental stewardship, and foster mental well-being.

Key speakers included agricultural entrepreneurs, psychologists, and youth development leaders who shared insights on:

Empowering Rural and Urban Youth through agri-innovation

Addressing Mental Health Challenges within farming and food production sectors

Sustainable Livelihoods and their role in psychological resilience

Building Green Economies that support both people and the planet

The Melrose gathering formed part of Metropolitan Collective Shapers’ broader mission to drive change and create platforms for young leaders to shape the future of their communities. By merging conversations about mental health with economic opportunity in agriculture, the event underscored importance of holistic development.

“Our goal is to ensure that every young person recognises the connection between mental wellness and economic empowerment. Agriculture is not just about food — it’s about growth, healing, and community,” said DR Antoinette Basson.

Attendees left the event equipped with new insights, practical strategies, and renewed motivation to create sustainable, mentally healthy communities across South Africa.
