Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Health and Wellness joins the nation in marking October as Mental Health Awareness Month, with deep concern for the growing mental health challenges affecting individuals, families, and communities.
South Africa continues to face high rates of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide, especially among young people. Yet, too many still struggle in silence due to stigma, discrimination, and the shortage of accessible services.
To respond to this concern, the Committee has initiated a Focused Intervention Study (FIS) to assess the Gauteng Department of Health’s ability to deliver quality mental healthcare. The study focuses on budget allocation, prioritisation of the programme, staffing, and the integration of services into primary and community care, in line with the Mental Health Care Act and the National Mental Health Policy Framework (2023–2030).
The Committee has already begun oversight visits to mental healthcare facilities, like Weskoppies Hospital, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and Cullinan Care and Rehabilitation Centre. Broader engagements with professionals, academics, and stakeholders are planned for November. Insights from these processes will guide recommendations aimed at strengthening Gauteng’s investment in mental health to ensure services are accessible, equitable, adequately resourced, and delivered with compassion.
“Mental health is inseparable from physical health. By speaking openly, challenging stigma, and investing in mental healthcare, we can build a healthier, more inclusive Gauteng for all”; concludes Adv. Ezra Letsoalo, Chairperson of the Health and Wellness Portfolio Committee.
