The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has officially launched the 2027 Online Admissions process for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners, calling on parents and legal guardians to prepare early and submit complete applications to secure school placement for the next academic year.
Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, said the province remains committed to building a modern, fair and efficient public education system that provides every learner with equitable access to quality education.
The Department announced that the 2027 Online Admissions application window will officially open on Wednesday, 5 August 2026 at 08:00 and close on Friday, 4 September 2026 at 00:00. Parents are encouraged to submit applications as early as possible, as late applications will not be accepted.
“The Gauteng Online Admissions System has become an essential tool in ensuring fairness, transparency and accountability while enabling the Department to plan effectively for one of the largest public education systems on the African continent,” said Maile.
Serving more than 2.4 million learners across 2,111 public ordinary schools, Gauteng continues to experience significant growth in learner numbers. More than 23,000 additional learners enrolled between 2025 and 2026, creating demand equivalent to approximately 19 new schools, each capable of accommodating around 1,200 learners.
Since its introduction in 2015, the Online Admissions System has transformed learner admissions by replacing manual processes, eliminating long queues at schools, improving transparency and strengthening education planning through a centralised admissions database. During the 2025 admissions cycle, approximately 400,000 Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners were successfully placed through the system.
Maile emphasised that online admissions are far more than an annual registration process. Every application assists the Department in planning for educator provisioning, classroom allocation, learner transport, the National School Nutrition Programme, Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM), school furniture, infrastructure development and future budget allocations.
Parents and legal guardians were urged to familiarise themselves with the five-step application process, which includes registering parent information, home address details and learner information, selecting up to five schools, and submitting all required supporting documents within seven school days after completing an application.
The Department recommends that parents apply to a minimum of three and a maximum of five public schools, preferably within their designated feeder zones, to maximise placement opportunities and allow the Department to utilise available school capacity effectively.
Supporting documents remain a critical component of the admissions process. Parents must provide authentic documentation, including proof of identity, proof of home address, proof of work address and, where applicable, a Grade 7 report for Grade 8 applicants or a clinic card for Grade 1 applicants. The Department stressed that proof of residence is particularly important in ensuring admissions regulations are applied fairly and consistently.
To protect the integrity of the admissions system, the Gauteng Department of Education will continue conducting address and document verification, home visits where necessary and investigations into suspicious applications. The Department warned that fraudulent documents or false information may result in applications being declared invalid, placements withdrawn and legal action being taken.
Maile also reminded parents that no public school placement is for sale and that all assistance provided by the Gauteng Department of Education is free of charge. Parents are encouraged to report any incidents of fraud, bribery or corruption linked to learner admissions.
To support families throughout the application period, the Department has made assistance available through 48 decentralised walk-in centres, all 15 district offices, the Gauteng Department of Education Head Office and every public ordinary school across the province. Parents are also encouraged to register one reliable cellphone number, which will be used to communicate application updates, requests for additional documents and learner placement offers.
The Online Admissions System applies only to learners entering Grade 1 and Grade 8. Parents of Grade R learners are reminded that they must submit a new Grade 1 application, while admissions for Grades 2 to 7 and Grades 9 to 12 must be made directly through schools.
Closing the briefing, Maile called on parents, schools and communities to work together in ensuring every eligible learner has a fair opportunity to access quality public education.
“Every complete, honest and timely application strengthens our ability to plan effectively, expand education infrastructure and improve service delivery. Together, we are building a stronger, more responsive education system that gives every learner the opportunity to succeed,” he said.
