Mohau Nkota and Thapelo Morena have paid tribute to Bafana Bafana following the national team’s spirited performance, applauding the players’ resilience, commitment and fighting spirit despite their heartbreaking elimination.
Reflecting on the defeat, Nkota described it as one of those moments in football that must be accepted, praising the team for leaving everything on the pitch.
“It is one of those games where you have to accept the result. The players gave everything they had, fought until the final whistle and represented South Africa with pride. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side, but they can leave knowing they gave their absolute best.”
Nkota believes the tournament has once again demonstrated the quality of South African football on the global stage.
“Playing on a stage like this is a dream for every footballer. It gives players the opportunity to showcase the talent that exists in the PSL and South African football as a whole. We must now pick ourselves up, focus on the future and continue working hard. There will be more opportunities, and when they come, we will be ready.”
The young midfielder, who missed the tournament through injury, also shared an encouraging message about his own recovery.
“Injuries are part of football. I am still young and I know my time will come again. Right now, I just need to remain patient, trust the process and continue working towards my return.”
Nkota added that, despite not being part of the squad, he remained immensely proud of the players.

“I have played alongside many of them, so whether they won or lost, I believed in them. They worked incredibly hard to reach this stage, and they deserve respect for what they achieved. What makes Bafana Bafana special is the balance between experienced players and exciting young talent. We fight together and we grow together.”
Meanwhile, experienced defender Thapelo Morena admitted the manner of the defeat was especially painful after the team came so close to forcing extra time.
“It is extremely difficult to accept because the goal came so late. We believed we were heading into extra time, and then everything changed in a matter of moments. It hurts not only the supporters but the players even more because they gave everything they had for the country.”
Morena praised the squad’s attitude throughout the tournament, insisting their performances have laid a strong foundation for the future.
“This tournament has been a valuable learning experience. Every match has taught the players something new, and those lessons will make South African football stronger. The important thing is that this group continues building on what they have achieved.”
He also highlighted the difference in intensity at the highest level of international football but believes the players adapted admirably.
“We knew we would face teams that dominate possession and play at a very high intensity. The players were well prepared, worked tirelessly and adapted throughout the competition. Experiences like these help our football continue to grow.”
Having also been sidelined through injury, Morena revealed he remained closely connected with the squad throughout the tournament.
“Although I couldn’t be there physically, I stayed in contact with the boys because they are part of me and I am part of them. As players, we have a responsibility to support each other through both victories and disappointments.”
Morena believes one of the key areas South African football must continue improving is converting goalscoring opportunities.
“We create many chances, but we need to become more clinical in front of goal. That is something we must continue developing from grassroots level right through to professional football.”
Despite the disappointment, Morena urged both the players and supporters to remain optimistic.
“The players have won the hearts of many South Africans through their commitment and performances. My message to Bafana Bafana is simple: do not lose belief. This is not the end—it’s another step in the journey. Learn from it, come back stronger and continue making the nation proud.”
Looking ahead, Morena also expressed gratitude for his journey with Mamelodi Sundowns.
“I feel honoured to represent this club. I thank God for giving me the strength to compete and contribute to the team’s success. My goal remains to continue helping the club win trophies, create unforgettable moments and make our supporters proud.”
