The opening day of the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge delivered another reminder of why the tournament has become one of South Africa’s most respected youth football platforms, with former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo praising the quality on display – particularly between the posts.

Watching the country’s next generation on the opening day of the tournament currently underway in Cape Town on Friday, Mhlongo said the standard of goalkeeping continues to rise, reflecting the increasing investment in youth development and specialized coaching across the country.

“For me, the biggest takeaway has been the quality of the goalkeepers. The game has evolved so much, and young keepers today are being coached differently. They’re comfortable with the ball at their feet, they communicate well and make good decisions under pressure.”

The former Orlando Pirates shot stopper, who has been closely following the opening day’s action, believes tournaments such as the Engen Knockout Challenge provide young players with an invaluable opportunity to test themselves against the country’s best talent.

“You can see these players have been well coached. The goalkeepers are confident, they’re brave and they understand the demands of the modern game. This is exactly the kind of environment they need because it exposes them to high-pressure football and helps them grow.”

Proudly themed Where Diski Legends Start, the Engen Knockout Challenge has built a proud reputation for producing players who have gone on to represent clubs in the PSL, Bafana Bafana and South African football at the highest level.

Mhlongo believes that legacy remains evident in every match.

“You can already see players who have something special. That’s what makes this tournament unique. It’s where young footballers get the chance to show what they’re capable of.”

The Engen Knockout Challenge continues on Saturday, 27 June with teams set to contest a place in the Engen Champ of Champs.
