The Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB) would like to assure liquor licence holders, the broader business community and Gauteng residents that despite current supplier-related delays affecting the printing of official annual renewal certificates, the Board remains fully operational and continues to execute its regulatory mandate without interruption.

The temporary challenge relates solely to the physical production and supply of renewal certificates. All other functions, including payments, renewals, compliance checks and law enforcement coordination, continue as normal.

This clarification follows an earlier statement by the Democratic Alliance, raising concerns about the impact of the delay on businesses operating within the liquor sector. While the GLB acknowledges the frustrations experienced by licence holders, no disruption compromises businesses’ ability to trade lawfully or endangers sector stability. The matter is being actively resolved, and the Board is engaging suppliers to expedite the delivery of the renewal certificates.

In accordance with the Gauteng Liquor Act, No. 2 of 2003, liquor licences must be renewed annually within twelve (12) months of issue by way of payment of the prescribed annual renewal fee.

Licence holders whose licences are due for renewal during this period are advised to continue using the existing temporary manual renewal arrangement, namely:

• Pay the prescribed annual renewal fee;

• Safely store and submit proof of payment accompanied by a valid 2025 renewal certificate; and

• Alternatively, renew online via the GLB e-portal at: https://glb.gauteng.gov.za

The GLB has been advised that supplier delivery of renewal certificates is anticipated by 26 February 2026. Should certificates be delivered earlier, the GLB will communicate accordingly and make them available for immediate collection. To ensure regulatory compliance during this interim period, law enforcement officers will require licence holders to produce:

• Proof of payment for 2026 renewal; and

• A valid 2025 renewal certificate.

Licence holders will also be required to provide proof of renewal to obtain their 2026 renewal certificates once issued.

The GLB recognises the vital role the liquor industry plays in the provincial economy, supporting jobs, township enterprises, tourism, and social spaces across Gauteng. The current delay does not equate to institutional failure and does not threaten business continuity or the rights of compliant licence holders to operate.

All relevant stakeholders, including suppliers and enforcement agencies, have been duly notified of the temporary supply constraints and corresponding interim arrangements. As such, no disruptions to lawful trading or enforcement processes are expected.

Where challenges or uncertainties arise, the GLB stands ready to assist all stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and continued compliance across the province.

Residents of Gauteng are further assured that regulatory oversight, including inspections, enforcement, and harm-mitigation measures, remains firmly in place. The Board remains committed to protecting both public safety and economic activity in the sector.
