Sekhukhune United returned to winning ways in impressive fashion on Saturday evening, securing a convincing 2–0 victory over provincial rivals Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership Limpopo Derby at Seshego Stadium.
The result was an emphatic response from Babina Noko following their midweek defeat to Kaizer Chiefs. Under head coach Cedric Kaze, Sekhukhune produced a disciplined and clinical performance to claim three valuable points and move up to third place on the league standings.
Sekhukhune made the perfect start when Tshepo Mokoena opened the scoring after just eight minutes. The in-form winger finished from a Givemore Khupe assist to register his third goal of the season and give Babina Noko an early advantage.
The visitors continued to control proceedings and doubled their lead in the 20th minute. Ngoanamello Rammala found the back of the net for his second goal in three matches, with D’Angelo Shaheed Kazeem providing the assist.
With Sekhukhune leading 2–0 at half-time, Polokwane City returned for the second half determined to mount a comeback. Coach Bayano Moloto made tactical changes, introducing Abraham Mashele and Bonginkosi Dlamini in an effort to inject fresh energy into the side.
However, Sekhukhune remained organised and resilient at the back. Polokwane struggled to break through the visitors’ defence, while goalkeeper Ayanda Ngwenya was called into action twice to keep the scoreline within reach.
Despite a determined second-half effort from Rise and Shine, Polokwane could not find a way past Sekhukhune’s defence. Babina Noko comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to secure a deserved 2–0 victory and important bragging rights in the Limpopo Derby.
The defeat was Polokwane City’s first league loss of the season and leaves them in seventh position. Rise and Shine will now look to respond when they welcome newcomers Milford FC on 26 August.
For Sekhukhune, attention now turns to another major challenge. Babina Noko will travel to face defending champions Orlando Pirates on 25 August, carrying renewed confidence after an impressive derby triumph.
The victory at Seshego Stadium represents an important statement from Sekhukhune United as the Betway Premiership season gathers momentum, with Babina Noko signalling their ambition to remain firmly among the league’s leading contenders.
