Profmed, South Africa’s intelligent medical aid for professionals, has launched BeRemarkable – a landmark member documentary series that goes beyond healthcare to celebrate the remarkable human beings behind some of the country’s most respected professions.
The series comprises three original short films, each now streaming on the Profmed YouTube channel, and tells the true stories of Profmed members who transformed personal adversity into extraordinary purpose – leaving a lasting impact far beyond their careers.

Flight Path | Dr Ryan Jacobs
At just 16 years old, Dr Ryan Jacobs had a clear dream: to become a pilot. That dream was taken away when severe epilepsy led to life-changing brain surgery. Where many would have seen the end of a road, Ryan saw a beginning.
Today, he is training as a specialist neurosurgeon at Tygerberg Hospital – driven, in no small part, by the very experience that once altered the course of his life. Every patient he treats reinforces why he chose this path, and every challenge he has overcome has shaped the doctor he is becoming. Flight Path is a story about what happens when a setback opens the door to something even greater.

Back to Water | Suzanne “Suzie” Hüsselmann
A devastating bodyboarding accident changed Profmed member Suzanne “Suzie” Hüsselmann’s life in an instant. The months of recovery that followed were as emotionally challenging as they were physical – but they also led her back to the ocean with a renewed and powerful sense of purpose.
Today, through her initiative Surf4Life, Suzie works with young people from vulnerable Cape Town communities, using surfing as a vehicle for confidence, resilience and opportunity. The same ocean that helped heal her has become a place where others learn to believe in themselves.

Into Focus | Tharien Schoeman
It took one patient – someone who had been waiting years for cataract surgery – to change everything for Tharien Schoeman. That single encounter lit a fire. Tharien’s determination has since restored sight, independence and hope to hundreds of people across South Africa.
Into Focus is a testament to what happens when compassion refuses to look the other way – and proof of how the courage of one person can transform an entire community.
