The much-anticipated launch of the Tswa Dear initiative took place at Mehlareng Stadium today, marking a powerful step forward in the fight against substance abuse and youth addiction. The event was graced by the Premier of Gauteng, Hon. Panyaza Lesufi, who delivered a heartfelt address to the thousands of young people and community members in attendance.

Premier Lesufi commended the initiative for its commitment to restoring hope and dignity among the province’s youth. He emphasised the collective responsibility to create opportunities and safe spaces that empower young people to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.

“Our young people deserve more than a second chance — they deserve a future filled with purpose, support, and love,” said Premier Lesufi. “Tswa Dear represents that promise — a movement of healing, renewal, and transformation.”

One of the most moving moments of the day came when a former addict Sibusiso Ntuli took to the stage to share their personal story of recovery in a period of 17 years. Their message of courage and perseverance deeply resonated with the audience, especially with those newly admitted to rehabilitation centres. Their testimony served as a beacon of hope, reminding many that recovery is possible with the right support and determination.

The Tswa Dear initiative aims to provide holistic rehabilitation support, mentorship programs, and community reintegration pathways for individuals battling addiction. By combining government support, community action, and personal stories of change, the program seeks to break the cycle of addiction and build stronger, healthier communities across Gauteng.

As the crowd cheered and the atmosphere brimmed with optimism, it was clear that Tswa Dear is more than an event — it is a movement that calls on every South African to take a stand for healing, unity, and hope
