Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, has handed over 123 title deeds to qualifying beneficiaries at the Affri-Village Mega Housing Project. This was followed by the handover of 65 newly built houses at the Westonaria Borwa Mega Housing Project in the West Rand.

The handovers form part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s commitment, under the Seventh Administration, to restore the dignity of residents by providing secure tenure, promoting homeownership and facilitating access to sustainable human settlements.

Addressing beneficiaries, MEC Motara emphasised the responsibilities that come with homeownership. She urged them to safeguard their title deeds and to make informed decisions about their properties. She also cautioned beneficiaries against selling their government-subsidised houses, noting that the purpose of the housing programme is to provide families with long-term security.

“Your house belongs to you, and the title deed is proof of your ownership. But ownership comes with conditions. By law, a subsidised house may not be sold within the first eight years unless it is first offered back to the Department. We do not encourage beneficiaries to sell their homes. Our objective is to create homeowners and give families a secure place to call home,” said MEC Motara.

The MEC also encouraged beneficiaries to draw up valid wills to avoid disputes over inheritance.

“Should a beneficiary pass away, there must be clarity about who inherits the property. I encourage beneficiaries to put their affairs in order by drafting valid wills to protect their families and prevent unnecessary disputes,” said MEC Motara.

The Department calls on all beneficiaries to protect their homes, understand their obligations as owners, and preserve these assets for future generations.
