Johannesburg is set to come alive with energy, culture and community spirit as thousands of residents take to the streets for the 702 Jozi My Jozi Walk the Talk 2026 on Sunday, 26 July. More than just a walking event, this year’s edition promises to transform the city’s inner core into a vibrant festival celebrating health, heritage, creativity and social impact.
Hosted by Jozi My Jozi, 702 and the City of Johannesburg, the iconic event enters its third decade with a refreshed vision aimed at reconnecting residents with the heart of South Africa’s economic hub while showcasing the city’s resilience, diversity and ongoing regeneration.
Participants will have the opportunity to choose from three routes—5km, 8km and 15km—each offering a unique journey through Johannesburg’s historic streets and cultural landmarks. Designed for walkers of all ages and fitness levels, including families with prams and wheelchair users, the event encourages everyone to experience the city in a new and inspiring way.
Adding to the excitement, the historic Nelson Mandela Bridge will host live pop-up performances by local artists, creating a festive atmosphere as participants make their way through the inner city. Along the family-friendly 5km route, walkers will also enjoy an outdoor art exhibition featuring works by Bertrams residents, with participants invited to vote for their favourite artwork. The winning artist will receive the People’s Choice Award and shopping vouchers, highlighting the event’s commitment to supporting local talent.
Speaking ahead of the event, Jozi My Jozi Chief Executive Officer Innocent Mabusela said the reimagined Walk the Talk reflects a broader ambition to reconnect people with Johannesburg’s rich history and vibrant inner city.
“Walk the Talk is more than 20 years old, and this year we’ve reinvented it as a landmark heritage event anchored firmly in the inner city. A strong part of that reinvention is the activities we’ve built into the day, many of them fully interactive,” said Mabusela.
All routes will start and finish at Ellis Park Stadium, where participants will walk through the stadium tunnel before crossing the finish line at the neighbouring Johannesburg Athletics Stadium. The celebrations will continue with live music, food stalls, local markets and the popular Walk the Talk concert, creating an unforgettable day for participants and spectators alike.
Beyond promoting healthy lifestyles, Walk the Talk 2026 is also driving meaningful social change through the Mi-Change voucher initiative, which seeks to address homelessness in a sustainable way. Participants are encouraged to purchase Mi-Change vouchers during registration instead of giving cash directly to people living on the streets. The vouchers can be redeemed at MES (Mould Empower Serve) and U-turn shelters for meals, clothing, hygiene facilities, temporary accommodation and access to rehabilitation and support services.
Mabusela said the initiative encourages responsible giving that helps create lasting change.
“While handing over cash may come from a place of warmth and goodwill, it can end up feeding addiction, encouraging begging and reliance, and entrenching long-term homelessness. Switching to vouchers shifts the action from simple compassionate giving to genuinely responsible, possibly life-changing action,” he said.
An interactive Jozi My Jozi exhibition at the event village will further educate visitors about practical pathways out of homelessness and demonstrate how collaboration between communities and social organisations can help rebuild lives.
To make participation easier, organisers have partnered with Gautrain and PRASA to provide affordable transport. Participants can travel free on the Gautrain to Park Station (subject to a R1 parking fee at participating stations), while PRASA will offer return tickets between Park Station and Ellis Park Station for only R20.
Organisers have urged residents to register before entries close, as places are limited.
As Johannesburg prepares to welcome thousands of walkers, the 702 Jozi My Jozi Walk the Talk 2026 stands as more than a community event—it is a celebration of unity, wellness, creativity and civic pride, inspiring residents to rediscover their city while contributing to a cleaner, safer and more inclusive Johannesburg.
