Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, today officially launched the Vorentoe Sports School of Specialisation (SOS), marking a massive milestone for education and school sports. This is the 38th School of Specialisation to be launched in Gauteng.

Vorentoe Sports SOS proudly offers 11 codes of sport, including Volleyball, Hockey, Tennis, Netball, Chess, Cricket, Soccer, Rugby, and Athletics. To support this wide array of sporting codes, the school possesses impressive facilities, including a volleyball court, netball courts, a hockey field, rugby and soccer fields, an athletics grass track, a cricket field, and tennis courts.
Learners brought these sporting codes to life through dynamic exhibitions that firmly cemented the school’s reputation as a true centre of excellence. From executing powerful tennis serves and strategic chess moves, to displaying raw speed on the athletics track, the athletes perfectly illustrated the intense dedication and high-calibre talent fostered within the institution.

During the formal programme, learners amazed the audience with a brilliant soccer skills demonstration, showing off elite footwork and ball control. They also proved that sports and technology go hand-in-hand by presenting a custom-built Sports App they developed, perfectly merging athletics with critical tech skills for the future.

Vorentoe SOS has a prolific history in sports and has produced major stars over the years. It is an undisputed powerhouse in cross-country; the boys’ team has reigned as North Vaal champions for 15 years, while the girls’ team has secured the title 13 times in the last 15 years. The school is known for breeding the next generation of sporting legends, producing world-class talent like Banyana Banyana’s Amanda Nthandi, as well as Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs player Itumeleng Shopane.

Building on this rich heritage, Vorentoe has consistently set the benchmark in disciplines such as soccer, netball, and athletics. The school has also produced international athletes such as Tumisang Monnatlala, who made history by reaching the finals at the IAAF World Junior Athletics Championships, alongside twin brothers Siphiwe and Bongani Mtshali, who achieved world-class hurdling times and competed globally.
Furthermore, Vorentoe’s excellence extends far beyond the running track. Former learners Bontle Lekone and Thabang Dube have proudly represented South Africa in soccer in Italy. Track star Moses Mabaso became one of the world’s finest athletes, representing the country in Australia and Spain. The school’s athletes continually secure life-changing international opportunities, with alumni like Thandi Sehohle competing at the World Cross Country Championships in China, and Tshwanelo Maropeng earning prestigious All-American honours in the United States.

During the formal programme, Wayne Williams of ION Holdings, a valued partner to the school, announced a major investment in the campus. The company will be building new classrooms, upgrading both the parking and sports facilities, and contributing toward the construction of a state-of- the-art pavilion. The Department is deeply grateful to ION Holdings for this tremendous contribution and for sharing the vision of empowering communities and developing the next generation of leaders at Vorentoe Sports School of Specialisation.
Following the formal programme, MEC Chiloane led a walkabout across the school’s multiple sports grounds to observe Gauteng’s future athletes in action. The exhibitions across the various sporting codes of Volleyball, Hockey, Tennis, Netball, Chess, Cricket, Soccer, Rugby, and Athletics offered a
glimpse into the immense potential of the current learners. This showcased how the school is actively preparing them for the global stage.
Whether executing precise movements on the sports fields, showing strategic brilliance in chess, or displaying raw power in athletics, the learners demonstrated the intense physical and mental resilience required to succeed in sports at an elite level.
More than its sporting prowess, Vorentoe has also shown great consistency in its academic performance. In 2024, the school achieved a 94.1% Matric pass rate, followed by an impressive 94.9% Matric pass rate in 2025. This demonstrates that playing sports does not take away from education; it actually enhances learning. The school will also introduce subjects that are relevant to sports careers, such as Sports Science and Sports Management.
In addition, through the Multi-Certification Skills Programme, learners will be empowered to matriculate with additional accredited skills and practical qualifications alongside their National Senior Certificate, ensuring they are highly employable and future-ready. The school will also serve as a secure hub for the community, bringing economic benefits and uniting people through the power of sport.
“Vorentoe Sports School of Specialisation is not just an institution, it is a beacon of hope, a centre of excellence, and a symbol of what can be achieved when knowledge, sport, and community come together,” said MEC Chiloane. “Let us continue to build on this proud legacy, ensuring that Vorentoe Sports SOS remains the key that unlocks success for generations to come.”
