After winning last month’s Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K on her South African debut, Doreen Cherop (Kenya) will be looking to claim another victory at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on Sunday 23 August.
“The 10km course was amazing and the race was very well organised. I wasn’t expecting to win. I was just aiming for a podium finish, only to find myself in a winning position. I think I won because I believed in my training,” Cherop explained, reflecting on the lifetime best 30:43 she clocked to shock pre-race favourite Brenda Jepchirchir in Durban on 12 July.
That performance, which came on her international 10km debut, proved to be a valuable learning experience for the 22- year-old Kenyan, who is now hungry for more Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series success. Yet even though Cherop will line up as the hot favourite at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on 23 August, she remains cautious, especially when facing a world-class field of 10km athletes at altitude.
“It feels good to run with champions. I am still gaining more experience on how to run 10km. So I just want to run my own race and do my best.”
With Cherop looking to build on her breakthrough Durban victory, Stillwater Sports Managing Director Michael Meyer expects another exciting women’s race in Tshwane:
“Doreen’s performance in Durban was a great introduction to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, and we’re excited to see what she can produce when she takes on the challenging Tshwane course,” says Meyer. “We’re expecting another exciting battle for the podium in Tshwane.”
