Jozi My Jozi and its partners regret to announce that the Main Street Sundays event planned for this Sunday (21 June) in central Johannesburg has been postponed due to the latest predictions of severe weather conditions.

The South African Weather Service, AccuWeather and several other forecasters expect cloudy and very cold conditions for this Sunday, with an 88% chance of rain and showers, prompting organisers to take the decision to reschedule the event.

Jozi My Jozi CEO Innocent Mabusela said: “We want to offer our sincere apologies to all our activators, small businesses, creatives, performers, suppliers, our partners, and the general public for the inconvenience caused by the postponement of this edition of Main Street Sundays. Our priority is to ensure another exceptional experience for everyone, which the inaugural edition in April provided.  We have been monitoring weather forecasts for the last few days, and it has now become clear that the adverse weather will have a serious impact on delivering this outdoor event.

“We have taken the decision to move the next Main Street Sundays event to August, when the weather improves. Based on long‑term weather data, August is one of Joburg’s sunniest and drier months, with mild daytime temperatures and minimal chance of rain. We are confident that moving the event will give us the best shot at clear skies, safe streets and a comfortable, car‑free day for everyone.

“Main Street Sundays is designed as a family-friendly, outdoor playground, and car-free celebration of Johannesburg’s inner city. It provides an opportunity to walk, cycle, skate and play in the streets. Adverse weather will make it impossible to deliver the safe, accessible and vibrant environment that Jozi My Jozi and our partners are committed to providing,” said Mabusela. “The safety and comfort of Joburg residents, visitors, and the many small businesses and creatives who bring the day to life, is our prime reason for postponing.”

Main Street Sundays is about reimagining the city’s streets as welcoming, people-first spaces.

The programme for the new date will be maintained, including family activities, market stalls, music, games, walking and cycling, and partner-led experiences along Main Street. This includes associated experiences like tours and activations in nearby venues aligned with Main Street Sundays.

Registration details and RSVPs on the booking platform, Luma, will be transferred to the next event, and additional guidance will be provided for vendors, performers and community partners directly via email.

Jozi My Jozi remains committed to creating safe, inclusive and joyful public spaces in the heart of Johannesburg, and looks forward to welcoming everyone back to Main Street Sundays once the August date is confirmed.
