The Sun Stars is an annual recognition programme celebrating outstanding employees who consistently exceed expectations, regionally and nationally, with the top performer crowned Sun Star of the Year.

Launched in 2022, the awards promote excellence and highlight the dedication of staff across the group’s diverse hotel and casino portfolio. The hospitality and entertainment industry is fast-paced and demanding, requiring energy, endurance, enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for people.

“All employees in this environment are exceptional, so to become the ultimate Sun Star requires going above and beyond in every aspect of their work,” says General Manager Charlene Ludick.

Exceptional Ownership and Vigilance: Lionel Monama

Meropa’s regional Sun Star of the Year, Lionel Monama, also placed third overall in the national results, for Exceptional Ownership and Vigilance.

“We are honoured to recognise Lionel for his outstanding sense of responsibility, vigilance, and commitment to guest safety,” says Ludick.

Monama took action in a sensitive situation which reinforced the group’s commitment to care, accountability and responsible gaming. His willingness to step outside of his defined role in a critical moment exemplifies true ownership and integrity.

“Lionel’s actions remind us that responsibility is not confined to job titles it is defined by the courage to act when it matters most,” says Ludick. “We proudly recognise him for his exceptional vigilance and commend him for making a meaningful difference.”

Meropa Casino & Entertainment World emerged as a standout performer in the regional awards, with winners across multiple categories.

Suzan Dikutle, Assistant Gaming Manager, demonstrated exceptional leadership and operational excellence. Her efforts resulted in a cash prize and an educational trip to Barcelona.

Appointed to her role just over a year ago, Dikutle brings more than 25 years of gaming experience and over 15 years in management. She has quickly made an impact, with a focus on growing private table gaming offerings such as blackjack, baccarat and poker, while strengthening skills within her team.

“Beyond achieving her performance objectives, Suzan has been instrumental in driving tables gaming revenue through disciplined floor management, strategic focus and operational oversight,” says Ludick. “Her targeted promotions have enhanced customer engagement, increased footfall and contributed directly to revenue growth.”

She has also maintained full compliance with gaming legislation while fostering a high-performance culture. Her nomination reflects her contribution to operational excellence and customer experience.

Other regional winners

Pauline Kekana, nominated by Dikutle and placed second, is recognised for her dedication and initiative. While responsible for administrative support within gaming operations, including invoice allocation and reconciliation, her contribution extends well beyond her core role.

Rene Prinsloo, placed third, was recognised for transforming the balance sheet reconciliation process from manual files to a centralised Share Drive system. This has improved efficiency, reduced costs, strengthened audit readiness and supported more sustainable operations. “Her initiative sets a benchmark for future process enhancements,” says Financial Operations Manager Matseke Malekana.

Ludick adds, “We couldn’t be prouder of these employees. Their initiative, loyalty and dedication show that this is more than a job, it is a calling.”
