South Africa’s Siya Kuse is preparing trojan-style for his highly anticipated rematch against WBC champion Melvin Jerusalem at Emperors Palace on May 16.
The Filipino champion has decamped to Japan for specialised training instead of his usual Philippines base, and will arrive in South Africa three weeks early to acclimate to the high altitude and shake off any jet lag.
Warns promoter Rodney Berman: “Jerusalem isn’t cutting corners. His plan to settle in early says everything. I’m genuinely concerned for Kuse. This is the fight of his life.”
Kuse pushed Jerusalem to the brink in their initial clash, but now faces a sharper, more prepared foe. Adding pressure is that there will be no homeground advantage, the three judges being fully independent, stripping away any backyard benefits.
The stakes skyrocket with unification dreams on the line. Jerusalem, as WBC king, is eyeing a blockbuster clash with rival champion Oscar Collazo, the lineal, Ring, WBA, and WBO titleholder, guided by Golden Boy Promotions.
Of course, Kuse will do the same – if he can pull off the ultimate win come mid-May.
Said Golden Gloves director Nivi Grogor: “With WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman attending, the stakes are super-high. Siya knows this, which is why we anticipate an incredible fight.”
