BUCS AIM TO FINISH THE JOB AGAINST STARS

Orlando Pirates are 90 minutes away from securing a place in the CAF Champions League group stage, but Namibia’s African Stars stand between them and progression when the sides meet at Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday.

Tshepang Moremi’s 75th-minute strike secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg in Gaborone, rewarding Pirates’ persistence against opponents who frustrated them for much of the contest. The result gives the Soweto giants a narrow advantage, but history suggests the return leg could be another tightly contested affair.

The fixture is set to provide another chapter in what is still a young rivalry dating back to December 2018 when the two sides met at a similar stage of the continent’s premier club competition. The stakes are just as high this time around, with the tie tightly-poised heading into the decisive second leg.

A History of Tight Encounters

Friday’s match will be the fourth meeting between the sides, with their three previous encounters producing just two goals – both scored by Pirates. The Buccaneers also edged their 2018/19 CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie 1-0 on aggregate, with Justin Shonga scoring in the away leg after a goalless draw in Soweto the week prior.

That history underlines the challenge facing African Stars, but also the fine margins that could determine the outcome.

The Buccaneers only need to avoid defeat to advance, while a one-goal victory for the visitors would level the aggregate score and send the tie straight to a penalty shootout. A win by two or more goals would see the Namibian side progress outright.

The Tactical Battle

The hosts will be encouraged by their defensive record at Orlando Amstel Arena, where they have conceded just twice this season. Durban City breached their defence in the MTN8, while La Cure Waves also scored in the previous Champions League round. Maintaining that resilience will be crucial, particularly if African Stars again prove difficult to break down.

The visitors have already demonstrated their defensive discipline, absorbing sustained pressure for 75 minutes in the opening leg before Moremi found the breakthrough. They will need a similarly organised performance in Johannesburg, while finding greater attacking threat if they are to overturn the deficit.

African Stars can also draw confidence from their previous-round comeback against Gabonese side AS Mangasport. After losing the first leg 3-1, they won 2-0 at home, with Lawrence Doaseb and Liam April scoring to level the aggregate score and secure progression on away goals. Their ability to recover from that position makes them a dangerous opponent despite trailing in the current tie.

Pirates meanwhile have shown their own capacity to deliver under pressure. Following a goalless draw away to La Cure Waves, they returned home to claim a come-from-behind 3-1 victory and book their place in the current round. That performance offers encouragement as they seek to ensure an extended run in the competition after just missing out on doing so in their previous attempt.

With so little separating the sides, patience and clinical finishing could prove decisive. Pirates must balance the need to protect their lead with the ambition to extend it, while African Stars will have to find a way past a defence that has been difficult to breach on home soil.

The Buccaneers have given themselves the advantage. Now they must turn it into progression and take the final step towards the group stage.
