Residents of Vanderbijlpark and surrounding communities are set to benefit from improved access to quality healthcare services, enhanced patient convenience, reduced waiting times, and strengthened emergency medical care following the opening of the newly built Johan Heyns Gateway Clinic.

The newly built, state-of-the-art facility was officially handed over by Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, together with the Executive Mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Hassan Mako, to the Sedibeng District Health Services and the Vanderbijlpark community this morning, 13 October 2026.

The handover forms part of the Gauteng Department of Health’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to quality, patient-centred healthcare services, while bringing healthcare closer to the people and improving health outcomes for communities across the province. The facility has been designed to bring a comprehensive package of primary healthcare services closer to communities while supporting the Department’s efforts to modernise healthcare infrastructure and improve service delivery.

The state-of-the-art clinic features 35 purpose-built spaces and systems, including 13 consulting rooms, an emergency room, a triage and vitals area, a physiotherapy room, a dispensary, and an innovative digital patient flow system. The system enables clinicians to electronically generate and send prescriptions directly to the pharmacy, reducing queues, improving efficiency, and ensuring that patients spend less time waiting for medication.

The facility also houses a Gauteng Emergency Medical Services base, strengthening emergency healthcare services in the area and ensuring quicker access to emergency medical care for residents of Vanderbijlpark and neighbouring communities.

The new clinic was constructed following the closure and redevelopment of the former Johan Heyns Community Health Centre, which is being transformed into a District Hospital. Once completed, the District Hospital will further expand access to healthcare services in the region, ensuring that communities have access to a broader range of healthcare interventions closer to where they live.

The Johan Heyns Gateway Clinic will operate from Monday to Friday between 07h00 and 16h00 and provide a comprehensive range of primary healthcare services, including acute and minor ailments management, chronic disease care, HIV, sexually transmitted infection and tuberculosis services, antenatal care, family planning, mother and child health services, social work services, rehabilitation services, mental health services, men’s health services, dietetics, Adolescent and Youth Friendly Services, health promotion, community outreach programmes, and Central Chronic Medicine Dispensing and Distribution services.

MEC Mazibuko said the opening of the facility demonstrates the Gauteng Government’s commitment to investing in healthcare infrastructure that responds to the needs of communities while improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.

“As we open this new clinic, we are confident that the community of Vanderbijlpark will have access to essential primary healthcare services while the reconstruction and redevelopment of the old Johan Heyns facility into a District Hospital continues. This clinic reflects our vision of a healthcare system that is accessible, integrated, and responsive to the needs of our people. It also ensures that patients receive care in a modern, dignified, and efficient environment.

“We will continue investing in healthcare infrastructure that responds to the growing needs of our communities and improves access to quality care. We call on residents to take ownership of this facility, protect it from vandalism and criminality, and work with us to safeguard this valuable community asset so that it can continue serving current and future generations,” said MEC Mazibuko.
