Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned MTN8 champions after securing a 2–0 victory over Orlando Pirates in a fiercely contested final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night, bringing the Buccaneers’ title defence to a disappointing end.
Orlando Pirates fought hard to find a breakthrough, creating promising attacking opportunities as they searched for a way back into the contest. However, Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams proved difficult to beat, producing a spectacular save to deny Deon Hotto and preserve his side’s advantage.
Pirates also threatened on a swift counterattack, but the opportunity went begging when the final effort missed the target with only goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to beat.
As the match entered its closing stages, second-half substitute Simphiwe Masilela nearly produced a memorable moment for the Buccaneers. Driving forward through the middle, he created space for a shot but sent his effort narrowly wide.
Just as Pirates appeared to be pushing towards a dramatic finish, Sundowns were awarded a penalty following a challenge by Thapelo Mokobodi on Siyanda Ndlovu. Iqraam Rayners took responsibility from the spot and confidently converted, beating Chaine to extend Sundowns’ lead to 2–0.
The penalty proved to be the final action of the encounter, confirming Sundowns’ victory and ending Orlando Pirates’ hopes of retaining the MTN8 trophy.
For the Buccaneers, the defeat was a bitter setback as they suffered their first loss of the season and surrendered their grip on the competition. Despite their determined efforts and attacking intent, they were unable to overcome Sundowns’ resistance.
Sundowns, meanwhile, celebrated a significant triumph on one of South African football’s biggest domestic stages, capitalising on key moments to secure the trophy.
The final delivered a decisive conclusion to the MTN8 campaign, with Mamelodi Sundowns emerging victorious and Orlando Pirates left to regroup as they turn their attention to the remainder of the season.
