New cultural tourism initiative connects visitors with the communities, businesses and people behind South Africa’s global music phenomenon
The Amapiano Route Network has announced the launch of the Amapiano Route, a new cultural tourism initiative designed to showcase the origins, evolution and economic impact of Amapiano while connecting visitors with the communities that helped shape the sound.
The initiative brings together music, tourism, food, entertainment, transport and storytelling to create an immersive experience through Gauteng’s Amapiano landscape.

The announcement follows Scorpion Kings Live: A Family Affair, headlined by DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 19 September 2026. The stadium experience opened at 12:00, with the pre-show scheduled for 14:00 and the main show from 18:00.
From the township to the world
Amapiano has grown from a South African township sound into a global cultural movement, influencing music, fashion, dance, nightlife and youth culture.
The Amapiano Route seeks to bring that story back home by connecting visitors with places, people, businesses and cultural spaces associated with the genre’s development.

Thulani Maduse, founder of the Amapiano Route, said: “The Amapiano Route is about telling the story behind the sound. The world knows Amapiano, but we want people to understand where it comes from, who built it and the communities that continue to carry it forward.”
The route explores destinations and experiences across Gauteng, including Pretoria, Soweto, the East Rand, and Johannesburg, while creating opportunities for visitors to engage with music venues, restaurants, fashion and lifestyle businesses, creative spaces, artists, and local entrepreneurs.
Maduse said the initiative was also focused on economic opportunities. “This is not simply a music route. It is a tourism, cultural and economic development opportunity. We want to create a platform where the success of Amapiano translates into opportunities for township businesses, young entrepreneurs, artists, creatives and tourism operators.”
Amapiano Route meets Scorpion Kings live
The first major activation of the concept centred around Scorpion Kings Live at FNB Stadium on 19 September 2026.

Selected influencers, media personalities, music industry stakeholders and visitors had an opportunity to experience a curated Amapiano journey before making their way to the stadium. The experience included selected cultural stops, local food and business experiences and opportunities to engage with township entrepreneurs.
Gautrain was an Official Transport Partner for Scorpion Kings Live, creating an opportunity to connect music, mobility and tourism around the major Gauteng event.
Tourism and economic opportunity
The Amapiano Route is intended to be developed in collaboration with tourism authorities, municipalities and private-sector partners. The initiative aims to create opportunities for local businesses to participate in the tourism value chain, including transport, hospitality, food, entertainment, fashion and creative industries.

Barba Gaoganediwe, Head of Destination Marketing and Communication at Gauteng Tourism Authority, said, “Music tourism centred around Amapiano serves as a vital economic and cultural driver, offering Gauteng a powerful vehicle to showcase its urban identity and attract domestic and international travellers to the province.”
The Amapiano Route forms part of a broader vision behind the Amapiano Africa Summit and Amapiano Africa Awards, which seek to position Amapiano as a platform for cultural exchange, tourism, youth development, entrepreneurship and international market access.
The long-term ambition is to establish the Amapiano Route as a recognisable South African music tourism product that can attract visitors from across Africa and international markets.
The initiative invites government departments, tourism authorities, municipalities, transport companies, airlines, hotels, restaurants, brands, media organisations, music companies, and private-sector investors to participate in developing the route.
Following Scorpion Kings Live, the Amapiano Route aims to make the experience bigger than a single concert by telling the story of the communities and culture behind the sound.
