The 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge is showcasing more than just emerging football talent, with former South African stars also playing their part in developing the next generation.
Just over a month ago, the eThekwini leg, held in partnership with SAFA eThekwini, once again underlined the tournament’s reputation as a key platform for young footballers looking to make their mark.
The presence of former football stars, who are now giving back to the game as coaches of their respective teams, reflected the tournament’s enduring legacy in developing talent and nurturing the next generation of footballers.
Their continued involvement in football after retirement reflects a deep passion for the game and a commitment to its future. By taking on coaching roles, they are able to share their wealth of knowledge and experience with emerging talent, helping to shape and develop the next generation of players.
Through their guidance, young footballers gain valuable insights into professionalism, teamwork, leadership and discipline, preparing them for success both on and off the pitch. Their presence also plays an important role in preserving the game’s rich knowledge base, ensuring that lessons learned over years of playing at the highest level are passed on to future generations.
Among the legends who graced the eThekwini leg were former Lamontville Golden Arrows star Philani “Dribbling Wizard” Shange—who was spearheading the AmaZulu Youth Academy Under-17 team—and former Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars defender Ayanda “Pastor Malume” Gcaba, who coached Senzokuhle FC.
Explaining his transition from player to coach, Gcaba said his passion for sport and his natural leadership qualities inspired him to remain involved in football after retiring from playing.
“I decided to become a coach after my playing career because I’ve always loved sport. Through football, I was able to make a name for myself, and I’ve always seen myself as a leader.”
Gcaba added that reaching the professional level required dedication and sacrifice, which motivated him to give back to the game. Through coaching, he hopes to share the knowledge and experience he has gained to help develop the next generation of footballers, with the goal of helping them realise their potential and embody this year’s Engen Knockout Challenge theme, “Where Diski Legends Start.”
