Preparations for the SAFA Elective Congress have moved up a gear after the Governance Committee returned to SAFA House on Friday to hand over the final list of the candidates that have been nominated for various positions.
The SAFA Elective Congress will be held on 12 September 2026 and the Governance Committee, which is an independent body, was tasked with dealing with any issues around the candidates, and checking whether they meet the criteria for nomination in terms of the SAFA statutes.
Governance Committee chairman Dr Victor Mogajane, deputy chairperson Tumi Dlamini, Anzel Laubscher and Abel Ramolotja handed over the final list to SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao on Friday. The fifth member of the Committee, Shakespeare Hadebe, has a bereavement in the family and could not attend the handover.
“We are going to give you feedback, and the feedback has been as a result of these members (the Governance Committee), that upon receiving the files, we met and discussed the details, and we went through a rigorous process, eligibility testing and vetting in terms of the SAFA statutes,” the Committee chairman said.
Dr Mogajane went into further detail and explained the composition of the final outcome.
“In terms of the Presidential list, we received two candidates, and these two candidates were vetted, and according to the list, it means the nominations for SAFA President are two. In the next category we have the nominations for the National list. We received 30 nominees, and out of 30, five are not eligible, and only 25 qualify through the vetting in terms of the statutes. The third criteria has the nominations for the Provincial list, and 27 were vetted, and five did not (qualify), and 22 were eligible. And in the last category, members of the public, are the Associate Members. We received nine, and four are eligible, and five are not eligible.”
SAFA will contact the candidates tomorrow and inform them as to whether they are eligible or ineligible to stand in the Elections next month. The Association has invited various stakeholders to the Elective Congress, including FIFA, CAF, COSAFA, SASCOC, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, the chairman of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture and legends of the game, among others.
